The Psychology of Micromobility

"Road user entropy in UK towns and cities is set to increase as micromobility usage increases. Formal assessment of cyclists’ capabilities, particularly their ability to deal with distractions, may be crucial to mitigate the consequences."

(Bishop et al., 2023)

What does increased 'road user entropy' mean? It means more moving parts in the road system and therefore, less predictability.

What does this mean? Road user collisions are set to increase, not decrease.

So, developing our understanding of people's perception, attention and decision-making when navigating roads – and how we might improve them – is crucial.

Bikeology research is focused on these vital processes, including how:

  • Individual differences in distraction control affects cycling behaviour

  • Mental effort influences people's attention while driving

  • Immersive VR training can improve young children's ability to cycle on roads safely.

By combining scientific research with innovative training methods, we aim to equip micromobility users, of all ages and backgrounds, with the skills and awareness required to navigate roads confidently and competently.

“The immersive cycling experience was a real highlight of the journey for both the girls. The study encouraged them to cycle much more than they have ever done. They cycled on usual roads after the study, something I would not have usually been too comfortable with."
